Rams Come Up Empty Vs. Greenwich

It was the wrong time for the New Canaan boys' soccer team to run into the Greenwich Cardinals. The Rams offense had no answers against a team on a six-game winning streak. New Canaan tried a new defensive scheme in an attempt to slow down Greenwich's offense, but could not contain the Cardinals, falling for just the second time this year, 3-0.

"Our game plan was simply to hold them off for at least 20 minutes to start the game, and we didn't do that," Rams head coach Victor Sanchez said. "We settled in defensively after that first goal. 3-0 doesn't really show how well we did defensively. We just couldn't get much going on offense."

Greenwich came out with guns blazing, as Izzie Hernandez found the net just four minutes into the game. From there the Cardinals defense smothered any chance New Canaan had. The Rams got only three shots on goal the entire game, none of which was threatening.

Hernandez fed a nice pass in the box to Reg Jones, who chipped it in for the backbreaking insurance goal. New Canaan could not find any offensive life and failed to make a shot on goal in the second half. Mark Johnson made it 3-0 on an incredible 35-yard kick from the extreme right side. Sanchez insisted that his team played better than the score showed.

"I'm not going to say it was an even game, because they controlled the ball for the most part," Sanchez said. "I was happy with the defensive effort and they just need to keep their heads up and not get frustrated."

The loss drops New Canaan to 6-2-3 on the year and puts a dent in their FCIAC playoff hopes. The Rams will have another huge test on their hands when they travel to Norwalk to take on the surprising first place Bears.
