The New Canaan High School girls soccer team didn't face Staples during the regular season. And after Saturday's crushing defeat in the first round of the FCIAC tournament, they probably don't want to see them again for a long time. The third-seeded Rams managed only four shots on goal as the Wreckers bounced them from the tourney, 4-1.
Staples' Jaclyn Katz had a hat trick and Abbey Lake had a goal and two assists, wreaked havoc on the Rams. Katz kicked off the scoring in the 19th minute, putting New Canaan in an early hole. New Canaan's Madzie Carroll brought the game back to even, scoring off a rebound with 5:54 to go in the half as the Rams tried to shift the momentum.
Once the second-half whistle sounded, however, Staples never gave them a chance. The Wreckers absolutely owned time of possession for the rest of the game. Lake added the go-ahead goal less than six minutes into the second half, deflating the New Canaan squad. Katz was all over the field, finding the open holes between Rams defenders to receive Lake's perfect passes. New Canaan had three corner kicks in the second half, but Staples cleared all of them out of the zone.
New Canaan now has the week to ponder what went wrong Saturday as it awaits the Class L state tournament.
