Race to Fight Autism Planned for Aug. 27

New Balance in New Canaan is sponsoring a race Aug. 27 to raise money for a fitness center for people with autism. The 5k race and 1k walk will begin at 6:15 p.m. at the New Canaan New Balance Store at 128 Main St.

The race is co-sponsored by SPED*NET New Canaan, which assists individuals with autism. The idea started in 2009 by New Balance owners Ron and Tina Rosenfeld, who were surprised at the number of individuals with autism who came into the store. In their efforts to give back to the community, the Rosenfelds saw an opportunity to extend their mission of health and fitness into the community.

Money raised in the race will help provide a safe, sensory friendly fitness facility in New Canaan for all individuals to enjoy, with particular attention to those with autism. The fitness path will be located in Waveny Park. Plans to create a challenge/fitness path have been established.

Runners can register online at https://www.raceit.com/register/?event=1231. Preregistration through Aug. 24 is $15. Post registration is $20. Registration the day of the race, up until 6:15 p.m., is $25.
