The New Canaan Flag Football League hosted a townwide Punt, Pass & Kick contest for boys and girls ages 6 to 15 at Waveny Park. Phil Davis, who runs the flag football league, put on the event with his fellow coaches.
"It's a great event for these kids," Davis said. "Whether you have football skills or not, it doesn't really matter. If you can punt, pass and kick, that's all you need to do."
The event, sponsored by the National Football League, test the accuracy and power of participants by having them punt, pass and kick a football. The player who boots and tosses the ball the farthest distance with the most accuracy moves on to the regional contest, held in late October or early November.
As for the flag football league, Davis was inspired to start that after his own children tried to play tackle football, but it just wasn't for them. "I was down in Florida watching my nephews play flag football, and I saw how organized it was down there. I said to myself, 'Let me see what I can do here,'" he said. "I came back, and I presented a proposal to the town, and they bit on it right away. They thought it was a great idea. As long as I ran it, they were OK with it.
"To me it was fun. I love the kids. I love to be involved with them," Davis said. "They love the sport, and we get the kudos from the parents. The response has been great here. I don't have any kids left playing, but I still enjoy it. I love the sport. Period. I love to come out and watch these guys. When you see the kids' faces light up, there's nothing that can compare to that."
