NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- Midway through her 14-and-under girls 100 breaststroke heat Monday, Libby OHare felt it was time to pick up the speed. The move worked and OHare won her race at the Westchester County Swim Conference 12- and 14-and-under qualifier in Scarsdale, N.Y. OHare, representing Westchester Country Club, finished with a time of 1:13.13, earning the top seed in the Westchester County Swim Conference Championship on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Westchester Country Club.
The top 16 swimmers and/or relay teams move into the finals. The 13-year-old, who is going into eighth grade at Saxe Middle School in New Canaan, Conn., finished a full second ahead of the second seed. OHare also brought her time down by 1.33 seconds from her original seed time.
When I saw people next to me and we were pretty far in the race, I knew I was on a pretty good pace, but I knew I had to swim faster, OHare said. I felt I was going at a decent pace because I felt smooth, fast and not tiring out, OHare said. I felt really good about my time when I saw it. I was just hoping to get into the final eight and into finals. Now, I would like to try and do better at conferences.
