NEW CANAAN, Conn. While some people likely spent their weekend on the beach, Trevor Healy spent his tearing up Long Island Sound. The New Canaan High grad won two popular races, taking first place in the Tod's Point swim in Greenwich on Saturday and the Westport/Weston Family Y Point-to-Point swim Sunday.
Healy had never swum in the Point-to-Point race before. He had not even heard of it until a friend at the Saturday race in Greenwich told him about it. Healy blew away the competition, finishing with a time of 15:15.
"Yeah, a friend of mine I swam with [in Greenwich] told me about it. This is really nice and it's a fun environment," Healy said. "I swam for the Y when I was younger and I know it's a great community organization and I'm glad to support it."
The Point-to-Point race attracted well over 200 swimmers for its 33rd year. The mile-long swim featured competitors aged 10 all the way to 76.
Recent Staples graduate Molly Loftus was the first woman to cross the finish line with a time of 17:09. A captain on the Wreckers swim team, Loftus is bound for the University of Tennessee to swim in NCAA Division I.
The race continues to expand every year, mostly by word of mouth. It has kept its largely local flavor, with the majority of swimmers hailing from Fairfield County. Sprinkled in the mix were some who came from as far as Maryland, Virginia, and even one from Australia.
The entry fees go to the Y Strong Kids Campaign, which raises money for underprivileged local children.
