NEW CANAAN, Conn. New Canaans Charlie Cole became the second rower from Fairfield County to make the U.S. Olympic team when he was named to the Mens Four. The selection is pending final approval of the U.S. Olympic Committee.
Cole will be part of the U.S. crew that will compete in the 2012 Summer Games in London next month.
Cole was named to the crew along with Scott Gault, Henrik Rummel and Glenn Ochal. Gault and Cole were members of the mens four that qualified for London with its fourth place finish at th 2011 World Rowing Championships.
"We have been training in this combination for a little while, but to be named to the Olympic team is a huge honor and one we are very excited about, Cole said in a press release distributed by USRowing. He is a nine-time national team member and Yale University alum.
Selection for the mens four was determined based on lineup evaluations, national selection regatta results and training camp performance in Chula Vista, Calif., under U.S. mens coach Tim McLaren. Twleve crews in all will represent the U.S. at the Olympics. Women's single sculls, lightweight women's double sculls, women's double sculls, lightweight men's four, men's eight and men's four, are in place.
Three boat classes the mens single sculls, mens pair and womens pair will be contested June 11-14 at the Olympic Trials in West Windsor, N.J. The remaining three crews the womens eight and mens and womens quadruple sculls will be named on June 22.
Westons Nick LaCava earned a spot last month on the Lightweight Mens Four.
Cole started rowing at Maritime Rowing Club under Yan Vengerovskiy.
