Campbell, a former member of Martime Rowing in Norwalk and current student at Harvard, won the first-ever gold medal in the lightweight men’s single sculls. It was the first gold medal for the U.S. in any men’s sculling or lightweight event at the U23 championships.
“This is my first gold – wow, that’s something else,” Campbell said in a story on the USRowing website. “I’ve trained a long time to be able to hear the national anthem at one of these. I think about all the hard work and training that’s gone into this. I’m so thankful to Yan and Olga Vengerovskiy, Charlie Butt, Linda Muri, my family – I’ve had such a great support network the whole way.”
Meyer-Bosse, a former member of Saugatuck Rowing Club in Westport, helped the U.S. men’s eight win silver. Meyer-Bosse is also a student at Harvard. New Zealand won gold, with the U.S. less than three seconds behind.
Elizabeth Youngling of Westport finished seventh in the meet in the Women’s Double Sculls. She teamed with Leigh Archer of Rhode Island.
On Saturday, Parker Lange of Darien and Matt Podlesak of New Canaan were part of the U.S. crew that finished sixth in the lightweight men’s quadruple sculls. It was the best finish in the event for the U.S. since 2006.
