More than 200 athletes from Fairfield Woods, East Ridge and Scotts Ridge (Ridgefield) middle schools, as well as the NB Blazers, competed in the meet on Wednesday, May 7.
The New Balance Blazers, numbering 65 athletes, are coached by Bill Martin, New Canaan High School boys track and field coach. The team, sponsored by New Balance New Canaan, was able to achieve impressive performances against two of Connecticuts most competitive youth track programs.
Among the girls, Megan DeMott won the 100-meter dash, 60-meter hurdles and the long jump. Cali Brannan swept the distance events (800 meters and 1,600 meters) and placed third in the long jump. She led a New Canaan sweep of the 800 meters, with Kaitlyn Popson and Cameron Blair finishing second and third, respectively.
The Blazers 4x400-meter relay team brought home the gold. New Canaan took first and second in the high jump, and Sarah Jane OConnor finished third in the 400 meters.
On the boys side, Christian Meier won the 800 meters and finished a close second in the 1,600 meters. Finishing first in the 200 meters was Christopher Carratu, and Jack Cutler placed second in the long jump.
The New Balance Blazers will have their next meet against Danbury, Wilton and host team Nutmeg Striders of Southbury at Pomperaug High School on May 24.
