New Canaan Winter Sports Kick Into Gear

NEW CANAAN, Conn. — The winter sports season gets into full swing Wednesday for New Canaan High School teams. The boys basketball, boys ice hockey, wrestling, indoor track and boys swimming and diving teams all start their seasons over the next week.

Wednesday features a nearly full slate of winter sports for New Canaan with five Rams teams playing.

The defending Class M state champion boys swimming and diving team kicks off against rival Darien at 3 p.m. at the Darien YMCA. The defending conference champion boys ice hockey team will travel to Notre Dame-West Haven for a 6:30 p.m. game at Bennett Rink.

The boys and girls basketball teams both take on St. Joseph at 7 p.m. The boys will be in Trumbull, while the girls will be home against the Cadets. The girls team started last week and is off to a 1-1 start.

Also Wednesday, the defending conference and state champion girls ice hockey team takes on the new Stamford-Westhill co-op team at 8:30 at Darien Ice Rink. The New Canaan girls opened their season with an 8-4 victory over Glastonbury on Saturday. Returning 50-goal scorer Olivia Hompe netted five in that opener.

The boys and girls indoor track teams will head to Brooklyn, N.Y., for their first meets of the season at the Bishop Loughlin games Saturday. The boys are scheduled to start at 2 p.m., while the girls are slated for a 5:30 p.m. start.

The boys wrestling team also starts Saturday with the Rams participating in the Pomperaug tournament, which starts at 9 a.m.

The gymnastics team will begin its season in January.
