New Canaan U12 Red Girls Soccer Team Tops Westport

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – The New Canaan under-12 Red girls soccer team rallied after a slow start to defeat Westport, 4-2.

Westport took a 2-0 lead 24 minutes into the game before New Canaan found its offense.

Freia Mierendorf’s goal early in the second half shaved the deficit to 2-1. New Canaan drew even as Reilly Krug handled a nice crossing pass from Eliza Pohle and drilled the ball into the upper left corner of the net from 20 yards out.

Krug was not finished. Five minutes later, she scored again with a roller into the left corner amid a wall of persistent New Canaan attackers. With a 3-2 lead, New Canaan's league leading defense went into its signature shut down mode. Caroline Sweeney, Eliza Farley and Abi Ferguson helped to keep the Westport attack at bay.

New Canaan drew inspiration from Abby Weiss's stellar save in goal at the 16th minute, protecting its one goal lead. After a Westport handball, Gianna Bruno iced the game for New Canaan on a free kick.

New Canaan is 5-0-1 heading into a June 3 game vs. Trumbull.
