NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- New Canaan's Matty and Emma Novick have been named to Israel's 19-and-under team that will play in the Women's World Cup this summer.
Matty and Emma, who are twins, have both committed to play lacrosse in college at Lafayette. Matty plays at New Canaan High School, and Emma plays at Convent of the Sacred Heart in Greenwich.
They will be joined on the team by Drew Reno of Cross River, N.Y.
The 2015 FIL Women’s U-19 World Cup and International Festival of Lacrosse, will be played in Edinburgh, Scotland, from July 23 to Aug. 1.
Israel’s roster is made up of both Israeli players, as well as members of the Jewish diaspora, in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Federation of International Lacrosse.
The roster was selected after a series of tryouts at Voldenberg Field in Ashkelon, as well as formal evaluations held in conjunction with the Israel U-19 Winter Developmental Program.
"Being Jewish is not only a religion but also a history and a heritage,'' Matty Novick said on the Israel Lacrosse website. "It provides me with an identity that I am proud of, a community that I love, and a unique connection to the world we live in. Visiting Israel has provided me with an education of my roots, and traveling to Israel was a life changing experience.
"I was able to further my understanding of myself and Jews alike by exploring famous landmarks, meeting people who live there, and enjoying the rich culture, all of which expanded my understanding of our story.”
