New Canaan Team Reaches Baseball Semis

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – The New Canaan Cannons will meet the Monroe Top Hats Saturday in Game 1 of the Fairfield County Men's Senior Baseball League semifinals at Mead Park. Game 2 in the best-of-three series will be played Sunday at Mead. Game 3 will follow immediately afterwards, if necessary. Starting times for both games are 9 a.m.

The Cannons advanced to the semifinals by winning a play-in game Saturday behind the pitching of Bob Cote. He pitched a complete-game three-hitter and helped his own cause by going 3-for-4 with four RBIs. He struck out five and walked one. Bryan Vickers, Scott Carew, Chris Cook and Mario Lopez all delivered big hits for the Cannons.

The Cannons closed the season by winning six straight games to reach the play-in game. They are led by former UConn pitcher Pat Chieffalo, Carew and Tom Dunnam and the strong infield play of Steve Benko, Brian Valentine and Robert Jones.

The Top Hats feature Pete Tucci, a former professional ballplayer from Norwalk High. The Top Hats finished 14-2 during the regular season to secure the No. 1 seed for the playoffs. The Bridgeport Brewers meet the Fairfield Mariners in the other semifinal round matchup.

The four-team competition for the President's Cup features the Westport Cardinals, Stamford Phillies, Trumbull Titans and Bridgeport Dodgers. Visit the league website for complete schedule information
