New Canaan, Staples Kick Off in Title Games

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – New Canaan and Staples play Saturday for state championships in football at Rentschler Field in Hartford.

Fifth-seeded New Canaan (11-1) plays No. 2 Daniel Hand of Madison (12-0) in the Class L championship game at 2 p.m. No. 2 Staples (11-0) plays No. 1 Xavier (12-0) in the Class LL championship at 5:30 p.m.

The Rams are playing in their sixth straight championship game. They lost to Masuk, 50-20, in the championship game last year after winning four straight titles from 2006-2009. The Rams are led on offense by record-setting quarterback Matt Milano, who has thrown 31 touchdown passes this season. New Canaan beat Hand, 34-30, to win the Class MM championship in 2007.

Staples has won three state titles under coach Marce Petroccio. The Wreckers are also the last team to beat Xavier, handing the Falcons a 31-28 loss in the semifinals of the Class playoffs in 2009.

The Class M championship game between Ansonia and Ledyard kicks off the three-game championship day slate Saturday. Those teams play at 10:30 a.m.
