New Canaan High Fall Sports Kick Off Tuesday

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Scrimmages are over and the fall sports season begins for real, as New Canaan High School athletic teams play their first games on Tuesday. Other opening games continue throughout the week.

Below is the schedule of season openers for fall sports teams at New Canaan High.

Tuesday, Sept. 11

The boys soccer team opens its season at Fairfield Ludlowe at 7 p.m. The Rams went 8-3-5 in their state title defense season, falling to archrival Darien in the second round of the Class L state tournament.

Wednesday, Sept. 12

The field hockey team kicks off the season at home against its archrival, Darien, at 4 p.m. The Rams were 9-4-1-2 last year, reaching the conference semifinals and the state quarterfinals.

The boys and girls cross country teams host their opening meet of the season at 4 p.m. The Rams take on Brien McMahon, Westhill, Danbury and Fairfield Ludlowe in a multi-team meet.

The girls soccer team hosts defending conference champion Greenwich at 4 p.m. The Rams were an impressive 12-2-2 last season, reaching the Class LL state quarterfinals.

The girls volleyball team is coming off its best season in a decade and will open its 2012 schedule at home against Westhill at 5:30 p.m. The Rams were 14-4 in 2011 and earned their first postseason victory since 2003.

Friday, Sept. 14

The defending conference champion girls swimming and diving team opens its season at its home pool at the New Canaan YMCA. The Rams take on Fairfield Warde at 3 p.m.

The New Canaan High football team hosts Bassick at 7 p.m. to begin the season. The Rams were 9-1 and advanced to their sixth straight Class L state championship game, but fell to Daniel Hand.
