New Canaan Girls Ice Darien, Stay Unbeaten

NEW CANAAN, Conn. — It is becoming increasingly difficult to see any team beating the New Canaan High girls ice hockey team this season. Holly Burwick netted a hat trick Friday as the Rams cruised to 13-0 on the year with a 7-2 victory over archrival Darien.

The game was unusual in that Olivia Hompe did not lead the Rams in scoring, although the junior captain did get New Canaan on the board first. Madzie Carroll netted the next two New Canaan goals to put the Rams up 3-0 in the first period.

Darien got on the board with under two minutes remaining on a goal from Sara Shaker. The Rams were not done, however, as Burwick netted her first goal of the afternoon. New Canaan took a 4-1 lead into the locker room after the first.

Darien cut New Canaan's lead to 4-2 less than 30 seconds into the second period on a Julia Arrix goal. That would be as close as Darien would get, though, as Burwick and Hompe scored 10 seconds apart later in the second. Burwick completed the hat trick with the only goal of the third period.

New Canaan will try to keep its perfect season alive Saturday when it hosts Wilton at the Darien Ice Rink.
