New Canaan Girls Hockey Holds Off Ridgefield, 3-1

NEW CANAAN, Conn. — In a rematch of last season's state title game, New Canaan girls hockey once again came away victorious against Ridgefield on Monday evening. Madzie Carroll broke a 1-1 tie with 30 seconds left in the second period to give the Rams the lead for good. New Canaan took down the Tigers, 3-1.

Holly Burwick put the Rams on the board first, scoring under a minute into the second period. Ridgefield put the only blemish on an otherwise stellar evening for goalie Britt Gardella (14 saves), knotting the game at 1-1 seven minutes later.

After Carroll put the Rams ahead, scoring machine Olivia Hompe gave New Canaan an insurance goal with 4:30 to play in the game. It is the Rams' fifth straight win to start the season.

New Canaan takes on Springfield Central (Mass.) on Thursday in a scrimmage. The Rams return to league action on Jan. 2 against Staples.
