Caroline Murray won two events to lead the New Canaan girls to a seventh-place finish Tuesday at the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference track and field championships at Danbury High School. The New Canaan boys finished sixth.
Murray, a senior won the 1,600 in 5:06.54 and led the Rams to a 1-2 finish in the 3,200. She finished in 11:24.12, followed by Stephanie Benko in 11:27.43. Both times were personal bests. Alex Spinu won the 800 in 1:57.42 for the boys. Danbury's boys and girls ran away with team titles in both meets.
Melanie Escalante also had a big day for the Rams, taking fifth in the 400, eighth in the 200 and running a leg on the eighth-place 4 x 400 relay. The top six in each event earned medals, while the top eight scored points.
Rebecca Evensen took third in the discus for the Rams. Other girls who earned points in individual events include Alexis Najarian (high jump, seventh), Cristina Konstantinovic (triple jump, eighth), Isabel Hetherington (1,600, eighth) and Isabelle Herde (javelin, eighth).
The 4 x 800 relay finished eighth with Emily Wood, Hetherington, Benko and Elizabeth Gordon. The 4 x 400 also took eighth with Eileen Dinnie, Catherine DiFazio, Julia Spindel and Escalante.
For the boys, Rami Hamdan was second in the shot put and discus. David Russell was seventh in the shot. Other Rams who picked up points included Nelson Conover (fifth, high jump), Devaun Bovell (fourth, 110 hurdles) and Pat Daly (fifth, 800).
The 4 x 800 relay team started off the meet with a solid fourth-place finish. The unit included Kalan Lysenko, Taylor Parsons, Brant Hoffman and Henson Orser. The 4 x 400 wrapped up the meet with a third-place finish. Orser, Isaiah Maisonette, Daly and Spinu comprised the relay.
