NEW CANAAN, Conn. Norwalk used a second half rally to defeat the New Canaan eighth-grade boys basketball team, 49-43, in the Dave Finch Tournament on Monday at Norwalks Ben Franklin School.
Tyler Sweeney scored 16 points for New Canaan. Kyle Smith added nine as New Canaan used a mix of seventh- and eighth-grade players on its team.
New Canaan led 36-30 after consecutive three-pointers by Sweeney to cap an 18-5 run. Norwalk led 25-18 at halftime before New Canaan used the hot shooting of Sweeney, who had 11 points in the second half, to seize the lead.
Norwalk answered with a 9-0 run to take the lead for good. New Canaan got within 45-44 on two free throws by James Crovatto with 3:24 left. Norwalk hit a three-pointer with two minutes remaining to take a 48-41 lead and held on from there.
New Canaan plays on Wednesday at 6:20 p.m. in its next tournament game. New Canaan, 5-5 overall, returns to action in the Fairfield County Basketball League on Jan. 6 against Greenwich. New Canaans seventh-grade squad is 7-2 overall and 3-0 in the Fairfield County league.
