New Canaan Black Holds Off Darien

Sunday's battle between the New Canaan Black and Darien Blue eighth-grade teams was decided on defense. New Canaan twice stopped a conversion attempt in the final minute to defeat Darien, 8-6, in a Fairfield County Football League game at Darien High School.

"It was a great team effort,'' New Canaan coach Ted Dumbauld said. "Sometimes it's offense, defense or special teams that help you win games. This time it was the defense and special teams."

His son, Teddy, played a big part in it. He scored New Canaan's touchdown on a 40-yard punt return late in the first quarter. Sean Queally ran in for the conversion. On the next play from scrimmage, Teddy intercepted a pass to get the ball back for New Canaan (4-2).

"I was almost down, a guy had me by the ankle, but I got free and just took off down the sideline,'' young Teddy said.

Both offenses struggled to move the ball consistently. Two New Canaan quarterbacks left the game with possible concussions. Darien (3-3) scored with 57 seconds left when quarterback Andrew Enzor hit Timothy Lochtefeld with a 19-yard touchdown pass. New Canaan stopped the first conversion. A penalty gave Darien another chance. Michael Kraus stopped the Darien runner just shy of the goal line.

"I was nervous,'' young Teddy said about the possible game-tying conversion. "It was awesome when we stopped them."
