New Canaan-Based Divers Win YMCA National Title

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Whirlwind Diving, based at the New Canaan YMCA, won the YMCA Nationals and finished fourth in the East Junior Nationals in competitions last month.

Whirlwind won the overall team title at the Y Nationals in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., with 692 points. Four divers prequalified for the Summer Junior Nationals with strong performances, including Darien’s Timmy Luz and Steven Kreuch, Stamford’s Sean Burston and New Canaan’s Kylie Towbin.

Burston finished first in the boys 16-21 3-meter and 1-meter. Towbin took first in the 14-15 girls platform, third on the 3-meter and sixth on the 1-meter. Kreuch was first in the boys 14-15 1- and 3-meter. Luz was first in the boys 11-13 1-meter and second on the 3-meter and platform. Whirlwind had 29 divers qualify for the Y Nationals, and 27 competed. Some divers qualified in more than one event.

In the East Junior Nationals in Maryland, Genevieve Angerame took third in the girls 1- and 3-meter. She also earned a berth in the Summer Junior Nationals.

Whirlwind had 14 divers at the East Junior Nationals and 16 qualified as it took sixth in team scoring with 41 points. Again, some divers qualified in more than one event.
