New Canaan Baseball/Softball Report

New Canaan, Conn. — The following are recaps of recent New Canaan baseball/softball game play:

Majors 60

Twins 14, Cubs 2: Led by right-handers Jake Cianco and Luigi DeRubeis, the New Canaan Auto Spa Twins beat the Cubs 14-2 in a four-inning matchup. Multibase hits by Noah Levine and Augo Frey, coupled with solid hitting by Jake Sloan, Jack Pugliese, Chase Pellegrini de Paur, Logan Otis, Seamus Curtin and Andrew Kurth, allowed the Twins to move through the lineup. The Twins are now 2-1-0 on the season.

Majors 70

Orioles 7, Dodgers 3: The Orioles, sponsored by WorldTek, improved their record to 3-1 on the year with a 7-3 win over the Dodgers. The Orioles pounded out nine hits, including a rocket home run off the bat of Robby Jones. Frankie Ramppen, Mattie Knight, Shafer Jones, Nick Potter, Thomas Philipson, Jack McCarthy, Justin Greco and Zach Lopez all had hits. Ramppen, Robby Jones and Zach Lopez pitched well for the Orioles. Abate, Pelli and Yancy led the way for the Dodgers.

Orioles 10, TPT Engravers 2 The Orioles, sponsored by WorldTek, beat TPT Engravers from Norwalk, 10-2, to improve their record to 2-1 on the season. The Orioles pounded out 10 hits, led by Eric Cimmino’s bases-loaded double into the right center gap. Also leading the offense were Nick Potter with two hits and Shafer Jones, Patrick Metzger, Frankie Ramppen, Mattie Knight and Robby Jones, each with a hit. The Orioles’ pitching was stellar, recording 12 strikeouts on the night. In combination, it was Justin Greco, Jack McCarthy, Thomas Philipson, Patrick Metzgar and Zach Lopez holding the TPT Engravers in check.

Dodgers 9, The Batters Box 4 The Scenic Design Dodgers beat The Batter's Box, 9-4. Mikey Pelli was 3 for 3, with two doubles and a home run. Dillon Abate was 2 for 3. Derek Perone was 2 for 3. Griffin Arnone, Michael Tuffy, Kyle McDonald and Jackson Yancy added hits to the Dodgers’ hit parade. Trevor DeGhenghi made a great diving catch in center field. Yancy pitched three solid innings, allowing three runs with five strikeouts. Will Sheldon pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowing one run and five strikeouts. Spencer Williams closed out the game on the mound.

Cub 9

Brewers vs. Rockies: The FactSet Brewers provided an early offensive assault, with solid hitting by Peter Jardim, Dylan Imbruce, Alexander Weismann, Zach Boland and Carson Palmer. The offense was anchored by solid defense by Jack Hynes behind the plate, with great pitching by Jack Ellis, Zack Ramppen and Alexander Platt.

Defensively, the Sprat Construction Rockies’ Colin Cleary caught two fly balls in center field to prevent additional Brewer runs, and Mike McDonnell pitched a strong third inning. Behind by five runs at the bottom of the sixth inning, the Rockies came back with Mike McDonnell leading off the rally with a base hit, followed by hits from Chris Richardson, Will Thomas, Charlie Von Oehsen and Cos DeFelice to win the game.  

Bantam 8

Bakersfield Blaze 11, Reno Aces 11: New Canaan Foreign Car Aces and Odd Job Landscaping Blaze battled to an 11-11 tie on Saturday.

The Blaze jumped on top early. Alex Ainsworth stroked an RBI single to open the scoring, while Dylan Murray and Baxter John each ripped run-scoring hits later in the first.

Nick Deligtich and Matthew Homan made slick defensive plays for the Aces, retiring The Blaze quickly in the second and kick-starting the Reno comeback. Clutch hitting from Chaitanya Garg and Trey Kollitedes had the Aces rolling in the late innings, but Chase Boshnack and Ryan Werneburg registered critical strikeouts, putting out the fire for the Blaze and preserving the 11-11 tie.

Marlins 10, Cardinals 4: In a well-played, hard-fought game, The Information Services Group Marlins defeated The Hutchinson Tree Care Cardinals, 10-4. Behind strong pitching from Griffin Deane, Matthew Benevento, Cameron Hill, Dukes Plum and Ben Loomis, the Marlins were able to keep the Cardinals offense down for much of the game. The Cardinals’ pitching was equally effective. Jack LaSusa pitched a solid second inning, striking out two. And despite being hit with a line drive, Jack Finnigan remained in the game and pitched a stellar fourth inning. The Cardinals were able to manufacture some runs behind a clean single from Harrison Graber and a double by Dylan Pesatore. But the Marlins eventually took control of the game. Brandon Kekedjian made a tremendous defensive play at third base and followed it up with a two-run double to left. Hits by Matty Panella, Joe Whitcomb and a 3-for-3 day from Charlie Panella rounded out the attack. Chris LaSusa was outstanding as assistant manager for the Cardinals.

Lynchburg Hillcats 14, Lansing Lugnuts 12: Ned Brady and Logan Johnson led Bobby Valentine’s Sports Academy Hillcats’ defense to a 14-12 win over Camsan Inc. Lansing Lugnuts. Mac Busby’s catching skills held runners from stealing bases. The Hillcats’ offense soared with a great day at bat for Jack Conners. In the third and fourth innings, Hillcats bats were quiet due to amazing pitching by Mike Sanseverino and Joe Hargrove. Jeremy Stewart and Steven Luccarelli’s bats roared for the offense of the Lansing Lug nuts.

Bantam 7

Hickory Crawdads 20, Toledo Mud Hens 20: After much back-and-forth and some tremendous hitting and fielding, the game ended in a tie. For the Karl Cheverolet Toledo Mud Hens, it was Colt Alford, Trey Hartnet and Henry Garrity who led the offensive charge. For the Hickory Crawdads, Chase Perlman, Mason Pickering and Nolan Charlton all played solidly.

Sacramento Rivercats 14, Frisco Roughriders 14: The Walter Stewart’s Frisco Roughriders played the Palladino Septic Sacramento Rivercats to a 14-14 tie. The Rivercats’ offensive juggernaut was led by hits from Dominic Rasso, Ian Waring and Luke Young. The Roughrider infield played a tremendous game, with great plays from George Stewart, James Wittman and Flynn Coffey. The Rivercats’ defense saw web gems from Brian Balkun, Daniel Rogers, John Totaro and Jonathan Jordan. The Roughrider offense was powered by extra base hits from Tommy Moore, Eoin Mueller and Andrew Nolan.

Bantam 6

New Orleans Zephyrs 14, Columbus Clippers 13: The Newmark Knight Frank New Orleans Zephyrs and CertaPro Painters Columbus Clippers opened their season in amazing, walk-off fashion.

The Clippers grabbed an early lead, paced by Fletcher Heron and Henry Silva, who each ripped multiple hits on the day. The Zephyrs limited the damage, thanks to some stingy defense headed by signal-caller Will Pepe.

Bradley Werneburg and Jack Sheffield recorded multiple outs for the Clippers, and Sumner Orr made numerous plays from the mound, giving the Clippers a five-run lead headed into the last half-inning.

Chris Ippolito, who sparked the Zephyrs all day with his hitting and aggressive base running, loaded the bases with the Zephyrs down 3 runs. Enter Alex Benevento, who blasted a shot to deep right field and flew around the bases, just beating a relay throw from Werneburg to Heron and sealing the win for the Zephyrs.

Softball Majors U14

Chargers 15, Bridgeport Caribe 0: Masterful pitching by Grace Wagner and a stellar performance behind the plate by catcher Claire Conley led the U14 New Canaan Chargers to a 15-0 season-opening win over the Bridgeport Caribe.

Great defensive plays were made by Ally Smicka to keep runners off of the bases. Addison Stauffer made a spectacular catch in center field for the second out of the fifth inning.

Offensively, the Chargers put the hurt on the Caribe, with doubles by Molly Keshin and Claire Conley. Base hits and walks were plentiful as Charlotte Decker, Riley Ward, Carly Bryant, Shannon McDevit and Rachel Keshin all reached base safely for the Chargers.

Softball Majors U12

Juggernaut 14, Heat 0: Gabriella Sulpizi had four hits, scored three runs, and drove in two to lead the O’Neill’s Tree Care Juggernaut over the Joe’s Pizza Heat, 14-0. Giuliana Ponterotto chipped in with three hits, two runs and two RBIs. Riley Mottolese drove in four, and Julianne Handy reached base safely all in all four trips to the plate, scoring twice.

Rachel Smith had a hit and made two excellent plays at third base to keep the Heat in it. Rose Engel also had a hit, and Allary Landeck kept the Juggernaut runners at bay with a solid game behind the plate.

Heat pitchers Emma Castiglione, Cassie Kane and Lauren Sturm were stalwarts on the mound, combining for seven strikeouts. Kelly Conheeney struck out three batters for the Juggernaut in two innings of work, and helped her own cause with a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish.
