NEW CANAAN, Conn. New Canaan Eighth-Grade Red improved to 2-0 on the season by dominating Fairfield, 34-7, on Saturday afternoon in Fairfield County Football League action.
New Canaan stifled Fairfield on its first possession, recovering a fumble on the third play of the game. On the first play from scrimmage, Kyle Smith blasted 25 yards for a touchdown, and New Canaan took an early 7-0 lead. New Canaan dominated not only the scoreboard but also on defense with the line playing extremely well. Nick Femia, Mike Cognetta, Chuckie Erdman, Kieran Schaney, Anthony Marciano, John Hetherington and Gardner Read also recorded tackles. The defense sacked Fairfield's quarterback three times.
On Fairfield's second possession, Clark picked up a fumble and returned it 10 yards to the Fairfield 25-yard line. It took just two plays before Smith found the end zone again, this time from 4 yards out. New Canaan then forced Fairfield to punt, which Smith returned for 55 yards all the way to the Fairfield 1-yard line. Nick Femia took the honors from there, and it was 20-0 with two minutes left to play in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Andrew DeFranco intercepted a pass on defense, then turned around on offense and ran 32 yards to make New Canaan's lead insurmountable. Fairfield got on the board with a 50-yard touchdown pass as time expired, making the halftime score 27-7. Chuckie Erdmann capped the scoring with a 45-yard run in the third quarter.
