NEW CANAAN, Conn. Norwalk Green battled host New Canaan 8th grade Black to a 7-7 tie in a hard-fought, bruising contest Sunday afternoon at Dunning Stadium.
In a game dominated by the defenses, neither team sustained an offensive drive in the first half. New Canaan quarterback Emerson Logie connected on pass completions to Peter Swindell and used runs by Andrew Jahns and Drew Monroe to pick up several first downs but could not get the Black in the end zone.
Logan Ritch led the strong New Canaan defense that bottled up Norwalk. Big hits by Logie, Monroe, Jahns, Luke Salvati, Lucas Niang, Clayton Burt and Thomas Williams limited the Green to one first down in the half. Pinned by the New Canaan defense at its own 5-yard line, a short Norwalk punt set up New Canaan at the Norwalk 28. Logie completed a short pass to Swindell, who pitched to Monroe, who raced into the end zone. Swindell added the extra point for a 7-0 lead at the half.
The defensive trend continued in the second half, and it was a special team's play that created a score. Forcing New Canaan to punt, Norwalk returned the kick for a touchdown. With the extra point, the game was tied at 7-7. But New Canaan drove right back with runs by Jahns and Monroe and pass completions to Clayton Burt. When the drive stalled, Swindells 26-yard field goal attempt fell short and the game remained tied.
The New Canaan defense completely shut down Norwalk in the final quarter behind big hits by Ritch, Charlie Wood, Matt Hall and William Arliss. The game ended with an interception by Monroe. The tie kept New Canaan undefeated at 4-0-1.
