New Canaan 6th Graders Stop Westport

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – The New Canaan Junior Black sixth grade football squad found itself in a tight game midway through the third quarter Saturday against Westport. Two long conversions for first downs helped swing the momentum in its favor en route to a 20-7 victory in the Fairfield County Football League game.

J.D. Sparks returned an interception 60 yards for New Canaan's first score and threw a touchdown pass to lead his team in its season opener. Sean Knight caught a touchdown pass and Jay Parmalee ran for a score for New Canaan. Nicholas LaMorte added a fumble recovery.

New Canaan led 14-0 at halftime before Westport scored early in the third quarter. On New Canaan's next drive, it converted for a first down on third-and-10 inside its own territory. Faced with a fourth-and-5 a few plays later, New Canaan got another first down to keep the drive alive.

Two plays later, Parmalee broke through for a 24-yard touchdown run to give New Canaan some breathing room. The defense took control after the score, keeping Westport bottled up in its own territory for most of the remaining time.

"I thought our defense was good with the exception of one big play,'' coach Dan Sparks said. "I thought we played hard and made them earn everything."

J.D. Sparks got New Canaan off to a good start in the first quarter with his long interception return. Late in the first half, Sparks found Knight for a 5-yard scoring toss. Thomas Russo's run for the conversion put New Canaan up 14-0.

Westport seemed to gain momentum with its touchdown before the two conversions and Parmalee's scoring run put New Canaan ahead by two scores. Westport struggled to move the ball all game against a hard-hitting New Canaan defense.

"It's great to get the first win,'' Sparks said. "This league is very competitive and we lost some close games last year. It's good to come out on top in a close game to start the season."
