NEW CANAAN, Conn. The New Canaan Red sixth-grade boys basketball team lost a 24-23 contest to Weston on Saturday. Weston won on a shot in the last minute of regulation with a shot from behind the backboard to capture the Fairfield County Basketball League win.
The teams traded leads throughout the tight contest. New Canaan led 7-6 after the first quarter with scoring from Jack Nowell, Quinn Murphy and Matt Knight. The second quarter finished with New Canaan Red trailing, 15-13. Zach Miller and Nick Potter helped supply New Canaans offense.
Diego Ospina, Sean Manzella and Julian Mastroianni each forced several turnovers as Weston players closed in on the basket.
In the third quarter, Charlie Hane helped to put the Red Team ahead by scoring a bucket, making back-to-back steals and grabbing three rebounds. Ospina finished the quarter by sinking a 15-footer to give New Canaan a 19-18 lead entering the final quarter.
Murphy, Miller and Mastroianni each scored in the fourth quarter to put New Canaan ahead, 23-22. After Westons miraculous basket put it ahead, New Canaan had two more opportunities to score in the last minute but came up short.
New Canaan also lost to Kings Kids of Bridgeport on Sunday, 45-38. New Canaan meets Holy Infant of Orange on Saturday. More pictures from the game are available at bestallstarpics.com.
