New Canaan 6th Graders Fall to Stamford

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – The New Canaan Red sixth grade boys basketball team fell to the Stamford Jewish Community Center, 51-28, in a Fairfield County Basketball League game at Saxe Middle School.

New Canaan trailed 28-15 at halftime as Jack Nowell, Zach Miller and Matt Knight made some nice shots. New Canaan’s defense was tested throughout the half by the taller Stamford squad, but Nick Potter, Francisco Gonzales and Julian Mastroianni battled on the boards and kept the team within striking distance. Stamford’s Ben and Zach Fishman were a key part of a Stamford offense that scored often and quickly. Both Fishman boys had three pointers, including a last-second shot that closed out the first half.

The second half opened at a frenetic pace with both squads trading baskets. Great ball handling and offense came from New Canaan’s Zach Miller, Francisco Gonzales and Nick Potter. But Stamford’s defense and deep bench helped the visitors pull away.
