NEW CANAAN, Conn. The New Canaan 6 Black Rams defeated Darien Wave on Saturday morning in Darien, 13-12.
Darien scored in the first quarter, taking a 6-0 lead, but the Rams prevented Darien from running in the extra point. On the first play of the second quarter, Jay Parmelee got great blocks from Max Thorsheim and Sam Parmelee and raced 65 yards for a touchdown. For the important extra point, David Kelly provided a great hold and J.D. Sparks split the uprights to give the Rams a 7-6 lead.
Darien answered back with a touchdown march. But again the Rams held on an extra point run attempt and the half ended with Darien leading, 12-7. In the second half, the Ram defense was outstanding. It was led by guard Nicholas LaMorte, ends Matt Russo and Charlie Hane, linebackers Sam and Jay Parmelee and Harrison Kazlauskas, and safeties Sparks and Sean Knight. Sparks pulled in two interceptions.
The Ram ground attack went to work behind strong blocking from Nick Potter and Max Holmberg and tough running from Russo and Sparks. On a third-and-15 from the Darien 35, Sparks passed to Jay Parmelee, who carried two Darien defenders into the end zone for the go-ahead score.
