NEW CANAAN, Conn. New Canaan fourth-grade Red dropped a seesaw battle with fellow Fairfield County Football League contender Wilton, 20-14.
On the first play, New Canaan's Nick Gilio made a short gain. And on the second play, Robert Evans ran for a 60-yard touchdown, his 14th of the season. Ryan McAleer successfully kicked the point after, making the score 8-0 after two minutes. Thomas Marshall, Charlie Mullaney, Alec Kazlauskis, Steven Hoge, Nick Gilio and McAleer made great blocks.
Wilton took the ball on its first drive from its own 20-yard line. A time-consuming 15-play offensive drive was stopped on the New Canaan six-inch line for no score. Tyler Saitta, Greg Korsun, Nicky Hoge, Andrew Smith, Robert Evans, Mullaney, Marshall, Gilio and McAleer made outstanding defensive efforts to stop a Wilton score.
The next New Canaan offensive drive ended with an incomplete pass, and the ball was turned back to Wilton. On its second drive, Wilton scored on a short run. The two-point attempt was stopped cold by Marshall, Korsun, Colby Gardiner, Dylan McDonald, Xander Arnone and Tyler Saitta. The half ended with New Canaan Red leading, 8-6.
Wilton scored on its first possession of the second half to make it 12-8. New Canaan Red struck back quickly on its first play of the third quarter with 45-yard touchdown run by McAleer. But the point after was not good, giving New Canaan Red the lead, 14-12.
Wilton scored on its next possession and converted a two-point play to go ahead, 20-14. This score held up as New Canaan Red was unable to score on its next possession, falling a yard short of a first down on the Wilton 20-yard line.
