NEW CANAAN, Conn -- The New Canaan Third Grade Red football team picked up where its left off last Saturday, scoring early and coasting to an 18-0 victory over Fairfield in a Fairfield County Football League game.
Similar to last week, Hayden Shin got things started with a nice four yard run up the gut. On second down and six from their own 24 yard line, Chris Canet went the distance on an electrifying counter of 76 yards. He went untouched thanks to blocking of Dylan Kortman, Charlie Borthwick, Jackson Lamorte, Jack Connors and Griffin Koch.
With Fairfield trying to get some momentum, Fairfield decided to go for it on fourth and six and was stopped cold by Hayden Shin, who flew in to thoroughly surprise the Fairfield runner.
NC took over on their own 24 with 10:24 left in Q2. On first down, Chris Canet went another 76 yards for an apparent touchdown, but was brought back by a penalty. Great blocking by Bryce Harrell and Corey Pickering allowed Canet to go for nine yards. Canet picked up a key fourth and eight with good blocking by Mac Machale, Ben Marshall, Will Thomas and Jackson Slazyk. Hayden Shin sped 12 yards down to Fairfield 30 with a minute left in half, but NC couldn't convert and went into half with a 6-0 lead.
Similar to Jack Connors exuberance last Saturday, Johnny Dunn streaked out from the halftime speech which exemplified the energy level of New Canaan. Maddox Underwood and Griffin Koch made great solo tackles, and then on third and long, Johnny Dunn made a key pass break up to get the ball back to NC.
After a quick three and out, Fairfield took over, but, like last week, Harry Appelt made another good read of a play. This time he recovered fumble and was immediately mobbed by teammates.
A huge hole opened by center Griffin Deane, Corey Pickering, Nicholas Radman, and Will Thomas enabled Tommy Towers to get around end for 19 yards down to the 14 yard line. Chris Canet then continued his superb play by going 14 yards to put NC up 12-0.
Clearly rattled, Fairfield then hiked the ball over head of its quarterback and Griffin Koch came out from under scrum with ball. Hayden Shin then took a handoff and barreled through four tacklers for big six yard gain before Tommy Towers scored from nine yards out with a good stiff arm to make it 18-0.
Jack Murphy, who excelled at safety all game long, then sealed the deal with a leaping interception to put the last nail in the coffin, final score 18-0.
It was a thorough "statement game" by Red, which faces Westport Saturday.
