NEW CANAAN, Conn. The New Canaan 3 Black team flexed its muscles over the weekend with a convincing 19-0 victory over visiting Darien White. The offensive line set the tone early with Matthew Benevento, Henry Benton and Matthew Balkun serving pancakes while Christian Carson and Christian Sweeney slashed through gaping holes. Two minutes into the game, the Black Team held a 6-0 lead.
Not to be outdone on the second drive, Braden Sweeney, Pablo Ospina and Branden Kekedjian flattened a few more defenders as Sweeney scored the second of his three touchdowns. Carson, whose 30-yard scamper set up the score, punched in the extra point and the Black was ahead, 13-0. Jack Goetz provided electricity in the second half, zigzagging through would-be tacklers on a 40-yard gain that set up the final touchdown.
But the day belonged to the defense, which limited Darien to just one first down in the entire game. James Avery and Charlie Youngs led the push from the defensive line while Jack Goetz, Reid Brown and Ben Graham corralled any Darien runners who broke free. Two-way starter Keaton Donnelly showed off his golden arm on offense, completing two passes for 35 yards, and made a textbook open field tackle on the last play, preserving the shutout.
