NEW CANAAN, Conn. The New Canaan third-grade Black team suffered its second loss of the season at the hands of Wilton Blue, 8-0. What was billed as an offensive showdown, instead turned into a defense struggle as the sun went down in Wilton.
Braden and Christian Sweeney controlled the edges for the Black team at defensive ends to contain a potent Wilton running game. Christian Carson and Ben Graham made great open field tackles while Callum Wood played like an all-pro middle linebacker, stuffing inside runners and playing sideline-to-sideline on sweeps.
The Black teams offense found running room early on behind Ethan Chalon, Joey Bucci and Ted DeClue but was denied on a crucial fourth down. The defense then drove Wilton back on its last position of the first quarter, setting up a third-and-15. But they got fooled on a halfback option pass that resulted in a first-and-goal from the 5-yard line. Wilton scored the games only touchdown two plays later and the Black team was behind, 8-0.
The defenses continued to dominate in the second half. David Siegel, William McKay and Matty Panella did a great job of keeping Wiltons offense in check. Jack Goetz caused and recovered a fumble while sacking the quarterback to start the fourth quarter.
The Black teams offense was wearing down Wiltons defense with strong runs from Christian Sweeney and Christian Carson, who carried six Wilton Defenders on his back en route to a key 10-yard first down run. As time was running out, the Black team drove to the Wilton 20-yard line. But it was forced into the air, and Wilton intercepted a final attempt to knot the game.
