NC Red 5th-Graders Fall to Darien

The New Canaan Junior 5 Red team played its best game of the season Saturday in a 14-6 loss to Darien. New Canaan hustled until the final whistle and scored on a brilliant 29-yard run by Thomas Russo late in the fourth quarter.

"I thought we played a very good game,'' New Canaan coach Matt Russo said. "They got outside of us on two plays, and that was the difference. We had a lot of people in new positions, and they did a good job. This is the best football we've played this year."

Nick Green's two short touchdown runs led Darien. Green scored on a 2-yard run in the second quarter and passed to Andrew Darby to give Darien a 7-0 lead. Darien stretched the lead to 14-0 early in the fourth quarter on another 2-yard run by Green. Kevin Grune ran for the conversion.

"We moved the ball,'' Russo said. "The offensive line really blocked well." New Canaan (0-3) meets the Darien Junior 5 Wave next Sunday.
