NEW CANAAN, Conn. The New Canaan High School boys soccer team has yet to lose in five outings. And head coach Victor Sanchez thinks the Rams have a way to go before they are playing their best soccer. That might be true, but New Canaan was still good enough to beat Fairfield Warde 2-0 on Tuesday evening in front of a small, but vocal home crowd.
New Canaan came out sluggish in the first half, struggling to get any offensive momentum against a feisty Mustang squad. Luckily, the Rams defense was up to the task, keeping Warde at bay.
The ball literally bounced New Canaans way with just over two minutes left in the first half. Jon-Luke Ferrandino collided with a Warde player and the ball squirted behind the last Mustang defender. That gave Tom Carey an unopposed shot, which he drilled past the helpless Warde goalkeeper.
We started out pretty slow, but we picked it up and played as a team, Carey said. We have a really strong defense this year, though. We scored that goal and it kind of kicked us into a second gear and helped us pick it up on defense.
The second half was an all-out assault by Warde, as New Canaans defense fought tooth and nail to keep its slim lead. Junior all-state goalie Scott Levene made six saves in the final 40 minutes.
Charlie Pickhard added an insurance goal in garbage time, drilling it past a half-hearted attempt at a save from 30 yards out. Steven Valente assisted on the goal.
Weve played well in 10- to 15-minute increments. Were lucky to pull of wins even though were not playing top-notch soccer, Sanchez said. They have the ability. They just need to step it up and stick to the game plan.
New Canaan (4-0-1) will travel to Trinity Catholic Wednesday for a 3 p.m. game.
