When the championship medals were handed out after Saturday's FCIAC title game, the biggest cheer went up for someone who did not even take the ice. New Canaan Rams team leader Henry Corcoran was sidelined for the rest of his senior season when a life-threatening blood clot was discovered in his arm. Corcoran, also a key member of the New Canaan lacrosse team, will have to refrain from sports for the foreseeable future.
His condition thrust him into an unexpected rolecoach. Corcoran led the locker room speech to his teammates when the Rams were trailing 3-1 after the second period. It was a testament to how much he remains a team leader, even if Corcoran is not on the ice.
"I've been pretty down because losing my senior season to anything like a blood clot is just ridiculous," Corcoran said. "But these guys have been so supportive and winning this game was huge. It really brought me up."
One of Corcoran's closest friends, Rams scoring leader Reed Harper, decided to honor his ill teammate by wearing Henry's number 19 jersey during the playoffs.
"Reed wearing my number means the world to me," Corcoran said. "All the guys came and visited me in the hospital. They really wanted me here today and wanted me to make the speeches in the locker room. It's really a loss of words for me. This means so much."
Corcoran is not quite out of the woods yet as a second blood clot was discovered in his arm. He is confident that he will overcome this obstacle.
"One more surgery and hopefully I'll be blood clot-free for the rest of my life," he said.
