Breaking News: Caught! Connecticut Father Wanted For Stabbing, Dismembering Toddler Apprehended, Police Say

Busy New Canaan Mom Tackles New York Ironman Race

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – New Canaan’s Kathleen Bucci keeps a low profile training for endurance events. She has, however, told friends about her training for Saturday’s New York Ironman, the first such endurance event to be held in The Big Apple.

“When I train for an event, the rest of the world has no idea what I do to prepare,’’ Bucci wrote on her blog. She is running for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. Greenwich’s Steve Kurczewski is also competing  for the foundation, which has 11 athletes in Saturday’s race.

Bucci has been among the biggest fundraisers for the cause, raising more than $15,000. The 11 athletes have raised nearly $100,000. The Norwalk-based organization has guaranteed entries for a variety of events and is registering athletes for Ironman and Half Ironman events for next year. People can support Bucci by donating through her fundraising page.

Bucci, the mother of four, finds time management one of her biggest challenges training for the race. The reward, she said, far supersedes the stress of trying to find training time.

“Every single day, before I get out of bed, I dedicate my workout of that particular day to someone that is battling a sickness or someone that has lost someone close to them because of sickness,” Bucci said. “On those days when the thought of working out is so hard, I think of someone that would give anything in the world to not only work-out but to simply get out of bed.”

Saturday’s race starts at 7 a.m. with a 2.4-mile swim in the Hudson River. That is followed by a 112-mile bike ride on the Palisades Interstate Parkway. The race finishes with a 26.2-mile run that starts in New Jersey, crosses the George Washington Bridge and finishes in Manhattan.

Bucci is no stranger to triathlons. She competed a half Ironman last year and has been a competitor in area races in Norwalk and Darien.
