Blaze Captures New Canaan Baseball Bantam Title

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Baxter John’s RBI single scored Will Schneider with the winning run as the Bakersfield Blaze defeated the Altoona Curve, 6-5, to win the Bantam Division of the New Canaan Baseball and Softball League.

Schneider, who preserved a 5-5 tie with a fine defensive play in the top of the inning, led off the bottom of the sixth with a single. Ryan Werneburg doubled to put runners on second and third before John delivered the winning hit.

The game went back and forth, with Altoona taking a 4-2 in the fifth before Bakersfield rallied to go up 5-4. Altoona tied it in the top of the sixth. Matt Mazabras and Chris Luchette pitched effectively for the winners, while other key contributors included Chase Boshnack, Alex Ainsworth and Dylan Murray. Altoona’s standouts included Chris Tenney, Giovanni Cascione, Edward Graham, Riley Gardiner, Matthew Boland, Peter Bennington and Jack Reed.

In other games, the Chattanooga Lookouts edged the Reno Aces, 12-9. Beau Ahrens, Peyton Welch, Brendan Keogh and Johnny Dunn led the Lookouts. Matt Wronski made a running grab of a line drive to save three runs. Nick Deligtisch, Taylor Yancy, Katie Perlitz and George Mulry led the Aces.

In a Bantam 7 game, the Toledo Mud Hens and Sacramento Rivercats played to a 17-17 tie. Top players for the Rivercats included Thomas Garcia, John Totaro, Ian Wearing and Reese Hanrattie. Taylor Brown, Cooper Dinan, Mathias Simon and Trey Hartnett.
