Hilary Saverin needs downtime. In the past month, she finished classes at Hamilton College, helped her team to the national championship game in the NCAA women's lacrosse Division III tournament, graduated and tried to figure out where she goes with the rest of her life
"It's amazing, I can't put it into words what it's been like,'' said New Canaan's Saverin, who played high school lacrosse at Taft. "It has been a whirlwind the last four weeks. It was a great four years."
Saverin and Hamilton fell to Salisbury University, 7-6, in the championship game on May 23. The game featured a wild ending. Hamilton scored the apparent game-tying goal a split second after the game officially ended. It was heart-breaking for Saverin and her senior classmates, but they left without regrets. "We were a little disappointed, but when we reflected we knew that we had played a great game and we gave it our best,'' Hilary said.
The ending capped a terrific career for Saverin. She started as a sophomore on the 2008 team that won the national championship. She started all 22 games for Hamilton (21-1) as a senior and finished with 17 goals and eight assists. She played in 72 games during her career and Hamilton went 74-8 during her four years at the New York school. Wilton grad Kate Fowler played goalie for Hamilton, and graduated with Saverin. Darien's Amy Marchesi, a freshman, also saw action.
"Everyone on the team was incredibly goofy,'' said Saverin, who is weighing her employment and career options with a degree in public policy. "We were light-hearted, but we held each other accountable." Saverin and Fowler were among six seniors who played in the championship game while classmates listened to General Electric CEO Jeffrey Immelt deliver Hamilton's commencement address. Saverin and the other seniors received their diplomas after the game at Gettysburg College. "Even though we came up one goal short, it was a special year,'' Saverin said..
