8 Black Beats Up Fairfield

NEW CANAAN, Conn — New Canaan  th grade Black traveled to Fairfield Ludlowe High School Sunday afternoon and rolled over the host Fairfield Blue team, 31-7.

New Canaan’s defense used backfield hits by Logan Ritch, Andrew Jahns and Luke Salvati to force Fairfield to punt on the opening possession of the game. Quarterback Emerson Logie immediately hit Peter Swindell with a 37-yard pass to get the offense rolling. A 19-yard run by Drew Monroe set up a touchdown pass to Shannon Smith. Swindell kicked the extra point and NC led 7-0.

With the next possession, Fairfield put together their only drive of the day and scored to tie the game at 7-7 late in the first quarter. An interception by Monroe was wiped out by a penalty that kept the drive going.

Undaunted, New Canaan came right back on pass completions of 13 yards to Jahns and 32 yards to Swindell. A 12-yard run by Logie was followed by a 20-yard touchdown pass to Smith, his second of the day. The two-point conversion by Swindell put New Canaan back on top 15-7 midway through the second quarter.

After an exchange of punts, the NC defense used blanket pass coverage by Clayton Burt, Aidan Buck and Anthony Pirrone and a strong rush by Thomas Williams, Matt Hall, Jahns, Ritch, and Jeffrey Murphy to force a poor throw that Monroe intercepted and returned 48 yards into Fairfield territory. Logie then beat the clock with passes to Swindell and Monroe for 22 yards each, with Monroe scoring as time ran out. New Canaan led at the half 21-7.

Offensive linemen William Hooks, Ryan Radecki, Casey Herzog, William Arliss, Hall, Ritch and Salvati combined with downfield blocking by Burt, Rafael Lovas and Zach Feldman to power the running game for most of the third quarter. Burt picked up 59 rushing yards in a drive that ended with a Logie touchdown pass — his fourth of the game — to Swindell. The extra point by Swindell upped the score to 28-7. Fairfield had the ball once on offense in the third quarter and a big hit by Herzog ended that possession.

The running game stayed strong in the fourth quarter and an 18-yard scamper by Monroe set up Peter Swindell for a 23-yard field goal pushing, New Canaan’s lead to the 31-7 final score. A Salvati fumble recovery put an exclamation point on the victory. New Canaan Black's record moved to 6-0-1 on the season.
