WESTPORT The New Canaan 6th-grade Black Rams defeated Westport South, 20-7, on a beautiful Saturday afternoon for football in Westport.
Westport drove into Ram territory after New Canaan was forced to punt, then J.D. Sparks made a leaping interception at the Ram 19-yard line and raced 81 yards for a touchdown. Thomas Russo ran in for the extra point behind great blocking by Nick Potter and Max Holmberg, and the Rams led 7-0.
The Ram defense was great all day. Led by Robbie Hynes, Nicholas LaMorte, Michael Tuffy and Charlie Hane, they held Westport scoreless in the first half.
The Rams drove down the field near the end of the half paced by running from Jay Parmelee behind great blocking by Tucker Seth and Will Ostrand. With time running out, Sparks threw to Sean Knight, who made a great touchdown catch in the end zone. After Russo bulled through three Westport defenders for the extra point, the Rams led 14-0 at halftime. Harrison Kazlauskas and Christian Parrott were great all day at center for the Rams.
Westport opened the second half scoring a quick touchdown to cut the lead. The Rams answered back, keyed by Sparks hitting Sam Parmelee on a 30-yard pass reception. Then behind great blocks by Max Thorsheim and Alex French, Jay Parmelee raced 25 yards for a touchdown. The Rams finished strong for a 20-7 victory.
