NEW CANAAN -- The Third Grade New Canaan Black team came to Dunning Stadium Sunday for its first ever game and walked away with a thrilling come from behind 15-12 victory over Wilton.
The offense ran well behind the strong line play of Matthew Benevento, Joey Bucci and Braden Sweeney, but two costly turnovers put the Black Squad in a 12-0 hole early in the third quarter.
The team hung tough and began its comeback with a 40-yard TD scamper by a speedy Matty Panella. The defense, which was led by Callum Woods team high 15 tackles, came together to stop Wilton.
William McKay and Jack Goetz harassed the QB in the second half and Goetz caused a key fumble giving the Black team the ball with five minutes and facing 12-6 deficit. Thats when Christian Sweeney and Christian Carson took over running hard behind Ted DeClue. Carson scored from three yards out and Sweeney knocked in the extra point to put the Black team on top 13-12 with one minute to go. A late safety finished the scoring and the young third graders savored their first win.
