2 New Canaan Athletes Win League Track Events

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – New Canaan’s Stephanie Benko lost a close race in the 3,200 last year to former teammate Caroline Murray in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference championships. Tuesday, Benko ran the perfect race at the perfect time to win the league title.

The senior waited until the final lap before pulling away from Ridgefield’s Sarah Guillaume. She won in 11:19:96, her best time this year by a startling 21 seconds. Benko had the only win of the day for the New Canaan girls, who finished eighth with 38.5 points. Darien girls won with 115 points.

On the boys side, Rami Hamdan won the shot put and was second in the discus as the Rams finished sixth with 54 points. Staples boys won with 147.5 points followed by Danbury with 82.5. The Wreckers’ victory ended Danbury’s 11-year stranglehold on the boys title.

Benko also ran a strong anchor leg for the 4 x 800 relay, which finished in 9:38.19. Greenwich won in 9:36.98. The foursome of Isabelle Hetherington, Emily Wood, Alex Naughton and Benko improved upon its best time of the year by more than 17 seconds. Benko is the only senior. The other three girls are sophomores.

Alex Najarian took sixth in the high jump, and Emily Lambdin was fifth in the pole vault. In the girls discus, Rebecca Evenson and Casey Pitts went 2-3 to pick up 14 points for the Rams.

Hamdan won the shot with a toss of 49 feet, ¼ inch. He took second in the discus to Greenwich’s Robert Gelcius, who also won the javelin.

On the track, Alex Spinu ran 4:22.95 in a swift 1,600 field to finish fourth. Devaun Bovell was third in the 110 high hurdles, and the 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 relays took fourth. Hensen Orser, Bovelll, Isaiah Maisonette and Spinu comprised the 4 x 400 relay, while the 4 x 8 included Kevin McEneaney, Kalan Lysenko, Maisonette and Orser.
