The district has five buildings, including the high school, Saxe Middle School, and West, South and East Elementary. The district projects to have 4,168 students in its schools. Saxe, which hosts students in grades 5-8, has shown increasing enrollment in recent years. This year’s projection is for 1,292 students, an increase of 75 from the 2009-10 school year.
Enrollment in New Canaan schools has grown since 2004, bucking the state trend. In June, the New Canaan school board approved the Saxe Building Committee's recommendation to add 12 classrooms at Saxe.
Classes begin Thursday at 7:30 a.m. for high school and middle school students. Elementary school students begin at 9:05 a.m.
Drivers near the schools are urged to be extra careful during the opening weeks of school. New Canaan police said it will monitor motorists who exceed the speed limit, use hand-held mobile devices and pass stopped school buses.
