Students Beam As School Bells Ring

Lynaea Pace was a picture of joy Tuesday as she marched into East school with her mother, Kristen. The 7-year old second- grader and her schoolmates waved to one another and hugged their teachers as they began a year of new classes, new rooms and new books to read.

"I'm getting to see my friends and play and I can go to the library," Lynaea said. Her mom said it will be nice to have the kids back in school. "It's good to be back to a schedule," she said. But "I'm not looking forward to those homework days."

Teresa Oliveira would have preferred being back on summer vacation. But since that wasn't an option, the third-grader put on a happy face and a purple dress as she pulled her bright book bag on wheels into school. Her mother, Ava Albrecht, smiled and offered encouragement. "It's going to be neat to meet new kids," Albrecht said. "I reassured her that it's going to be all right."
