The essay contest topic this year was to describe a Colonial family’s discussion about the New Stamp Act (1765) and what role it played in organizing the colonist against the British King and Parliament. Wunderlich’s essay began, “It was a chilly night in the year 1765. The wind blowing up against the windows, trying to break inside the warmth of the fire. Just as I started writing in my journal, my father swung open the door….” Wunderlich then describes how her father became a Sons of Liberty, protesting the Stamp Act, “no taxation without representation” and that their lives would never be the same.

Wunderlich was one of many students in the New Canaan School District to participate in the American History Essay Contest.

The subject of the DAR American History Essay Contest for grades 5-8 for the 2016-2017 school year will be, “Celebrating a Century of America's National Parks.” The DAR Christopher Columbus Essay Contest for grades 9-12 for next year will be “Technology's Impact on the Voyage of Christopher Columbus.”
