Spirit Soars at New Canaan Homecoming

Kate Mannelly did not mind the nerves and noise she faced Friday afternoon. The senior enjoyed the loud and proud gymnasium at New Canaan High School in her final homecoming pep rally, holding the microphone as a co-emcee of the festivities.

"It's a lot of fun," said Mannelly, 18, who led a largely red-and-black-clad student body in cheering on the teams in advance of weekend competitions. The highlight event of homecoming weekend will be when the Rams football team takes on Wilton High School at 1 p.m. today. Students also attended a bonfire Friday evening at the school.

"It's great to get the whole school together," she said. The homecoming rally is "a unifying thing for the school, and it's always fun."

Mannelly said it was more fun being a senior and being at the head of the school, but she it's a collective enjoyment. The highlight for her was watching the dance competition, featuring students from the fall sports squads. The girls' soccer team won the goofy dance show for a third straight year.

Junior Maddie Gordon, 17, loved being with such a vocal student body, screaming and clapping with her fellow members of the Class of 2012. "It gets everybody hyped up. It's one of the times when we're all together," Gordon said. "It's great seeing all of us in red and black and hearing everyone cheering."

Fellow junior Michael Demattia, 16, said the rally was just another example of the spirit at New Canaan High. "Everyone is involved," he said.
