Rain Doesn't Dampen School in New Canaan

NEW CANAAN, Conn.  – Annamaria Ramirez’s smile said it all. While many youngsters at Saxe Middle School were wondering why summer had to end, Annamaria glowed with happiness when she saw her mother, Azenet, to tell her she’d had a fun day in school.

“It was really, really cool,” said Annamaria, 10. “School is super cool”

The first day of the 2011-12 school year was completed amidst rain and cool temperatures, yet the mood was jovial. While Saxe’s seventh and eighth graders were allowed to leave early, the fifth and sixth graders stayed around to get a few more matters squared away before the real schooling begins.

Her mother said Annamaria was excited about going to school even in the summer. She looked forward to meeting new friends, reuniting with fellow fifth graders who made the move with her from East Elementary School to getting to make ice cream. “She wanted to go to get started,” Ramirez said.

Shawna Kempf, 13, also gave the first day a solid review. As an eighth grader, this will be Shawna’s last year at Saxe before she moves on to New Canaan High School. Shawna said she likes her teacher, Scott Chard, and admitted it felt good walking the halls as a middle school senior.

“It was fun,” she said. “We went to class and learned the rules of the classroom.”

Shawna’s mother, Terri, said it’s time to move on from summer and for Shawna and sister Amber, 10, to learn new things. “They want to get going. They want to see their friends,” Terri said.

Not everybody was so jolly. Andreas Moor, 11, dreaded having to ride his bike home under rainy skies. “I would have liked some more summer,” he said. The best part about the first day of school for Andreas?  “We had no homework,” he said.
