Parking, Sidewalk Fix Set For New Canaan's East School

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – More parking spaces and a cleaned-up sidewalk are some of the things New Canaan Public Works officials plan to bring to East School in November.

The plan is to take out the grass shelf, located between the entrance and exits of the parking lot, and clear the way for three parallel parking spaces, Assistant Public Works Director Tiger Mann said. Visitors often park on the patch of grass when most of the parking spaces are filled, he said. This would be an improvement, he said.

Several parents and school officials have mentioned concerns, Mann said. The curb has plenty of cracks in it, and wheels have created mud puddles, Mann said. It’s easier to rip it out and make it a paved parking area, he said.

“It’s legitimizing the parking,” Mann said. “People drive up on the grass and park up there, anyway. The area that’s grass is all dirt and mud.”

The Board of Selectmen voted this week to approve a $55,000 special appropriation for the work. The expenditure still must be approved by the Board of Finance and the Town Council. If both bodies approve, Mann said, work could start by Nov. 1. First Selectman Robert Mallozzi III said he hoped the project could be done before the winter.
