NEW CANAAN, Conn. Nick Depuy, 18, cant imagine life without his guitar. Music is my bread and butter, my steak and potatoes, said Depuy, a senior at New Canaan High School.
But it didn't start out that way. His initial foray into the guitar as a sixth-grader left him frustrated because he didnt pick it up as fast as he would have liked. I was an impatient learner. It came too slow at the time, said Depuy.
His friends persuaded him to get back into it about three years later, and now Depuy finds himself practicing the guitar two to three times a day, working on chord progression and writing tunes about different aspects of life. I didnt think it would come to this, said Depuy, who is on the road to big things in the world of music.
Depuys musical talents are acclaimed by many of his classmates and others, who have compared his style to Chet Atkins and Danny Gatton. He has also heard from a record label that is interested in signing him, though Depuy wont say which one. But hes excited that people are recognizing his talents.
Many of his classmates cheered his performance of Tuesday Morning during New Canaan High Schools symposium on the 10th anniversary of the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Although organizer and history department head Richard Webb asked Depuy to prepare a song three weeks before the Sept. 27 event, Depuy couldn't put the song together until the night before.
The song sort of fell into place in about 20 to 30 minutes, Depuy said. Tuesday Morning is less about the events of Sept. 11 and more about the long, arduous process of healing."
