The students will be working with the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and the Harborwatch program at Earthplace in Westport as well as going door-to-door and collecting samples to create a baseline sample for New Canaan’s surface water, a news release said.
“As science educators, we strive to find real-life, relevant issues that allow students to define problems, collect and analyze data, draw conclusions, communicate findings and develop solutions to those problems,” Christian Dockum, chair of the high school’s Science Department, said in the release.
“This fellowship will provide the perfect opportunity to get our High School students engaged in an issue important to our local community and the ecosystem at large,” First Selectman Rob Mallozzi III said in the release.
The fellowship was created by Heather Lauver and Micaela Porta, co-founders of Pesticide Free New Canaan, a program that seeks to limit exposure to toxic lawn chemicals by helping people treat their lawns pesticide free.
